Sprains and Strains

A sprain is a tear of the ligaments around a joint whilst a strain is a tear of the muscles and tendons.

The treatment for a Sprain or Strain is R.I.C.E. What is this?

Rest

Ice

Compress

Elevate

If your unsure if the injury is a Sprain, Strain or Fracture. What would you do?

Treat as a fracture ( worst case scenario) and arrange for an X Ray to confirm

How could you Sprain or Strain your ankle?

Twisting awkwardly, dropping down a curb, misplacing your feet, sporting activity.

Common causes include:

Sporting Activity

Twisting of the ankle

Over stretching

Awkward movement

Recognition:

  • Pain
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Inflammation
  • Inability to move the affected area

Treatment for a Sprain or Strain

Rest – Stop sporting activity or whatever you are doing and rest

Ice – Apply Ice, not directly on the injury but wrapped in plastic or fabric

Compress – This helps reduce the swelling

Elevate – To reduce swelling.

If very painful or pain is not easing seek medical advise. Sometimes an X ray is the only way to tell if there is a break or not.

This guidance is great but no substitute for a practical First Aid course.
